about

This song was written specifically as a "call and answer" protest song to be sung at rallies and on the fence lines protesting against the clearing. It is deliberately very simple and direct, and can be sung by pretty much anybody!

The tune is from a Pete Seeger song Pay Me My Money Down which was itself based on a song sung by Negro stevedores and collected in 1942. Bruce Springsteen covered it in 2006 on his album The Seeger Sessions. The key change is attributable to Bruce.

lyrics

CHORUS
Don't Build Don't Build
Don't build this stupid road
Roe 8 so out of date
Don't build this stupid road
X2

Let the people have their say
Don't build this stupid road
Building Roe 8s not the way
Don't build this stupid road
X2

CHORUS X2

Stop the clearing right away
Don't build this stupid road
You're bulldozing our EPA
Don't build this stupid road
X2

CHORUS X2

UP TO G

This road to nowheres just so dumb
Don't build this stupid road
The outer harbour has to come
Don't build this stupid road
X2

CHORUS X2

Billions wasted nothing gained
Don't build this stupid road
Colin you should be ashamed
Don't build this stupid road

CHORUS X2

Back down to E

Elections coming you're going down
Don't build this stupid road
So stop the clearing stop it now
Don't build this stupid road

CHORUS X2
